Electronic ID, ID Cards and Standartization
This paper describes one application of high-end smartcards electronic identity, or EID. EID is far more than a concept. Rather, it is a framework for covering most personal identification needs in automated information systems, thus forming the core of information system security. Because this is a universal solution, it requires a considerable amount of standardization before public utilization. In this paper the author describes the current state of agreements and standardization issues, as well as preliminary plans in this area that have been developed in Estonia. To complete the picture, he also discusses relevant projects elsewhere in the world, the fundamental problems that are associated with EID on smartcards, and various competing solutions that have been elaborated.
